Bal is taken from the Cornish word meaning ‘mining place’. The term ‘Bal Maiden’ has been used since the early 18th century to refer to the women who laboured alongside men in the South-West mining communities, given the job of crushing and sorting copper ore by hand.

This series of work was created during a residency with Cornwall College and Camborne School of Mines, where I produced a body of material research whilst providing teaching support on the BA Hons Creative Practice Course.
